Hello Genners,

Would anyone know the meaning of the first name Szyfra? I'm trying to determine if
it's an variation of Tziporah/Cype/Cypele in Yiddish.

Many thanks for your comments,

Szyfra is the Hungarian spelling form of the Biblical name Shifrah. She and Puah
were Moses midwives (book of Exodus).

Hi - Szyfra is not a variation of Tziporah, etc. It is from the Bible
(Exodus 1:15) and has no other meaning that I know of. The usual
spelling is Shifra.

Szyfra - Shifra according to English spelling norms - is a biblical female
name. Shifra was one of the two Hebrew midwives instructed by Pharaoh to throw
male babies into the Nile (Exodus, chapter 1, verse 15 and onwards; quoting
from http://www.mechon-mamre.org/e/et/et0.htm: "15 And the king of Egypt spoke
to the Hebrew midwives, of whom the name of the one was Shiphrah, and the name
of the other Puah; 16 and he said: 'When ye do the office of a midwife to the
Hebrew women, ye shall look upon the birthstool: if it be a son, then ye shall
kill him; but if it be a daughter, then she shall live.' 17 But the midwives
feared God, and did not as the king of Egypt commanded them, but saved the
men-children alive."

Nothing to do with Tziporah [a Hebrew, biblical name] or /Cype/Cypele the
Yiddish claque. Tziporah, by the way comes from "a bird" and it's Yiddish
version is Feigel, Feige, Feigele - all having to do with the Yiddish word for
"bird".
