Does anyone recognize this old town name of "Prostnetz", Poland? Can you
tell me where it is located today? I have tried the Shtetl Seeker, but
without further clues, I have no idea which town it might be.

Thank you,

Mimi, I believe you are looking for "Proshnitz".

For many years my grandmother promised to give to me my grandfather Littman's
kiddush cup, which is inscribed "Independent Prushnitzer KUV". I later learned
that he is buried in one of two "Ind Prushnitzer KUV" burial society plots in
Mt. Zion Cemetery, in Maspeth, Queens. Other Littman relatives are buried in
another Prushnitzer plot at Mount Judah Cemetery, part of the Highland View
group of cemeteries in Queens.

My family said he was from "Prushnitz", but Proshnits seems more common in print.

According to shtetlmaster, the current name is:

Przasnysz, Poland
53 02 20 53 87 km N of Warszawa

Other names include: Przasnysz [Pol], Proshnits [Yid], Prashnitz, Proshnitz,
Przashysz, Pshasnish

After WWII: Przasnysz, Poland
Between the wars: Przasnysz, District Przasnysz, Province Warszawa,
Country Poland
Before WW I: Przasnysz, District Przasnysz, County Pock, Country Russian Empire

If you have relatives who came to New York from Proshnitz, I strongly suggest you
check out the burial plots at Mt. Zion and Mt. Judah if you haven't already. I
found quite a number of my relatives there, including my great, great
grandparents. Best of luck,

Thank you for your replies to my query about Prostnetz, Poland. The general
concensus is that it is now called Przasnysz, Poland, and according to the
Lauder Foundation, is located about 110 km. north of Warsaw. That location
seems fit into my family genealogy quite nicely!

Many thanks to all...

If you have ancestors from Prooshnitz (my grandmother's pronunciation,
aka Przasnysz), I am the JRI-Poland
shtetl coop coordinator for the town. I have additional records,
primarily from 1808-1864, not yet available
on JRI-Poland's database on the web
(but I'm working feverishly over the next week to finally finish this
work off so it can be uploaded to the web).

Contact me privately at <***@gmail.com> and I'll see if I can help.
