There are about 1,100 graves sites in this Cuban Jewish cemetery featured in
the story. 50 have been cleaned and 150 more are expected to be cleaned by
the end of the year. Land in Guanabacoa was bought in 1906 by members of
the island's first Hebrew society. The cemetery was inaugurated in 1910.
Most of the Jews were from Central and Eastern Europe and those who fled
between the first and second world wars. (In full disclosure I had cousins
who fled Poland in the 1930's to Cuba).

Many Jewish families left the country after the 1959 revolution. Their
buried love ones remained. In the 1990's Judaism on the island regained
strength due to the efforts a surgeon, José Miller, who helped Jews
scattered throughout Cuba reconnect with their roots. Dr. Miller died in
2006 and is buried in the cemetery.

A memorial was inaugurated in 1947 a 10 feet monument paying tribute to the
6 million lost in the Holocaust. Bars of soup made with human fat from the
concentration camps by the Nazis are buried near the monument.

Those Jews who live in Cuba now are about 1,500 and are mostly elderly.

In 2007 while in Havana doing research - for two weeks my wife and I visited
the Guanabacoa cemetery every day and updated JOWBR with information and
photos. This news is good news. The matsevot are all in terrible shape after
years of neglect and hostile climate. However there also is a large Sephardic
cemetery nearby, which because of time, we were not able to visit. Their
cemetery needs restoration as well.
